A Professional Level Paintjob for a Space Marine Icon
As someone who’s been painting miniatures for over 35 years, this project has been a particularly exciting one. I’ve always believed that a good paint job brings a miniature to life—not just for the gaming table, but as a display-worthy piece of art.
This particular Space Marine Predator Annihilator wasn’t just another tank in the queue. As a fan of the Space Wolves chapter, I had been dreaming of doing this model justice for a long time. When I finally got my hands on a kit that included rare metal parts, I knew I had something special components that are no longer in production, and therefore worth preserving and showing off in a unique way.
Design and Assembly – Getting the Space Marine Tank Right from the Start
Precision from the First Cut
Right from the unboxing, I knew this build had to be handled with care. These metal parts aren’t just rare—they’re detail-rich. I carefully cleaned and dry-fitted all components to ensure tight seams and crisp joins. Since this kit didn’t come with optional components, there was no need for magnetizing or complex configuration swaps. Everything was locked in from the start.
The full build took over 15 hours—every part, seam, and detail was prepped with the end result in mind.
Preparing for Paint
To make sure the painting phase would be as smooth as possible, I assembled the tank in subassemblies. This let me access every angle for maximum detail during painting.
The whole tank was primed using an airbrush for maximum control of the paint layering. This step is often overlooked, but for a model like this being a big one composed mostly of flat panels , it sets a clean and smooth surface to work on. One key tip I always follow: match your lighting with the lore of your chapter. The Space Wolves are a fierce and noble force, and the lighting had to reflect that icy, stormy energy.
Painting the Space Wolves Predator – Techniques That Pop
Airbrush Foundation
With the model primed and shaded, I laid down a base coat of Space Wolves Grey using the airbrush. I used color modulation techniques to help the tank’s edges and panels stand out dynamically under different lighting. These tones really help give the tank that extra “pop” you see in high-end tabletop presentations.
Fine Details with the Brush
Next came the brushwork. I hand-painted all the edge highlights and carefully applied decals and chapter symbols.
A touch of subtle weathering gave the tank just enough grit without overwhelming its clean lines. I also added a custom hunter killer missile rack detail, just to make this model one-of-a-kind. The small details on the sensors, muzzle marks, and vision slits were finished with gloss effects to add contrast and realism.
Varnish and Protection
To lock in all that work, I applied a matte clear coat to protect the paintjob from both dust and handling. The gloss areas remained untouched for that dramatic contrast effect.

A tank like this would be the centerpiece of any army!
Incredible detailing on the lascannons — looks ready for battle!
Is this model playable in games or just for display?
I always paint my models for both. 🙂
As someone still finding their feet in miniature painting, I found this article so motivating. The dedication it took to build and paint this Predator Annihilator really shines through. The fact that you worked with rare metal parts makes it even more special — handling and assembling that must have been a unique experience! I appreciate how you detailed your process, especially the part about planning lighting to match chapter lore. That’s a tip I’ll definitely use for my own models. I’m curious, what’s the biggest challenge you faced while working on this tank? Thanks for sharing your journey — it’s inspiring!
Thanks are not that difficult to paint if you know what you are doing. Maybe the slight weathering was the main challenge I did not want to over do it.
Looks like it rolled straight off a battlefield. Amazing work!
That custom missile touch really makes this Predator unique.
I’m absolutely amazed by this Predator Annihilator tank! The paintwork is next-level — that custom Space Wolves grey really brings the whole model to life. I can only imagine how satisfying it must feel to hold and admire a tank built from rare metal parts. That kind of craftsmanship is hard to come by these days, and it’s inspiring to see someone take such care to preserve and showcase it. If I had a Space Wolves army (I’m tempted now!), I wouldn’t hesitate to add this masterpiece to my collection. Do you plan on doing more tanks like this?
At the present moment no but I can get going on one really fast. It depends on what inspires me.
